From a City Window
Windows have many functions in the poetic imagination. They represent thresholds, frames, portals; narrow channels through which conversations can be held, perhaps from opposing sides of a divide; they form the liminal spaces that allow voyeurism or invitation, serenade or declaration. They can also represent confinement or exclusion.
In 2020 our physical worlds were made suddenly very small; as a volunteer in my community I witnessed the myriad forms of exchange that take place over a windowsill, and made many precious connections myself. The recital programme we offer was inspired by the people, conversations and moments shared in lockdown.
The programme includes Schubert, Clara Schumann, Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss, Schoenberg, Alma & Gustav Mahler, Marx, Berg, Hahn, Poulenc, Ravel, Granados, de Falla, Donizetti, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Ireland, Parry, Howells, Bridge, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov.
