Windows have so many functions in the poetic imagination: thresholds; frames; portals; facilitating conversations held between two sides of a divide; looking out, looking in; voyeurism; invitations, serenades and declarations; confinement and exclusion.
In 2020 our physical worlds were made suddenly very small; as a volunteer in my community I witnessed the myriad forms of exchange that take place over a windowsill, and made many precious connections myself. The recital programme we offer today was inspired by the people I met, the conversations and moments shared in lockdown.
The programme includes Schubert, Clara Schumann, Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss, Schoenberg, Alma & Gustav Mahler, Marx, Berg, Hahn, Poulenc, Ravel, Granados, de Falla, Donizetti, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Sullivan, Ireland, Parry, Howells, Bridge, Nadia Boulanger, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov, Zemlinsky, Viardot.
